What made Tanglewood Conservatories fall in love with Maryland and its Eastern Shore?

In honor of Maryland Day, we are taking a moment to reflect on what makes this state special, especially for those of us who are proud to call it home. Maryland is a tapestry woven from rich and diverse history, vibrant cultures, and a spirit of innovation that has thrived for centuries.

One of the defining reasons Tanglewood has set its roots on Maryland's Eastern Shore is its long-standing tradition of craftsmanship, particularly in woodworking and shipbuilding. This region has been synonymous with excellence in these trades for generations, showcasing the skill and artistry of local woodworkers. You can’t help but notice this specialized expertise shine through in our conservatories. We pride ourselves on quality materials and our master artisans, making our work like no other. Each piece reflects a commitment to our craft and attention to detail, ensuring that our creations are not just products, but timeless works of art.

Maryland is also home to the second-oldest steel framed-and-glass building still in use in the United States. Completed in 1888, The Howard Peter Rawlings Conservatory was designed by architect George Aloysius Frederick, the Palm House, with its 175 windows soaring 50 feet into the air, is a spectacular example of Victorian architecture. The adjacent Orchid Room, although smaller in scale, is equally stunning.

In the same vein, the 18th-century Wye House Orangery is shrouded in history and design excellence. As one of the earliest buildings of its type still standing in Maryland, it is a rare example of a heated Orangery built by wealthy plantation owners.

From our roots here in Maryland to designing and building conservatories across the U.S. and internationally, while our team and capabilities have grown over the years, one thing has never changed - our vision. We are driven by a desire to inspire those we touch through the creation of extraordinary glass architecture.

Reflecting on the challenges and triumphs of our early projects, we were reminded of the craftsmanship, artistry, and attention to detail that has made Tanglewood a trusted name worldwide. From our first modest all-wood conservatory here in Maryland to designing intricate, one-of-a-kind steel and glass conservatories for private residences and commercial venues, we are so proud of our team who continue to push the boundaries of conservatory design.

Our passion has led us to continue to enhance our design and fabrication capabilities, expanding our offerings to create pieces that bring to life the vision of our clients and partners.
