“The custom steel palm house conservatory we designed with Tanglewood Conservatories was
one of the most extraordinary features of this home.”
Architects and designers love using steel for custom conservatories, greenhouses, and skylights because its strength gives them the design freedom they need to breathe life into their client’s vision! Since the Industrial Revolution, steel has been used to create extraordinary spaces and the great conservatories of the nineteenth century were some of its most exuberant expressions.
Great palm houses also began to be built around the world. These fantastical greenhouses were designed as much to showcase the new building materials – steel and glass that had become available to architects and builders, as they were to house specimens.
They were whimsical, transparent, crystalline conservatories often attached to a formal manor home, and they provided their occupants the opportunity to bask in light and congeniality. Cast iron, steel, and glass were the materials that made them possible, and this custom, steel conservatory greenhouse is no exception.
If you have been following our most recent project, The Palm House, you have seen our client’s vision for a great steel and glass palm house come to life along the shores of Michigan! From the arched ornamental details to the beautifully crafted windows, steel allowed us to create a completely custom design.
“For many years, I lived in Europe so it did not take long for me to envision the design
style the owner was looking for”
