EACH TANGLEWOOD DESIGN — whether a glass-roofed conservatory, an elegant orangery, or an all steel estate greenhouse — is the result of a meticulous architectural process that is both collaborative and creative. We never know where that process will lead us before we start, often finding ourselves in uncharted waters — creating a one-of-a-kind work of art that has never existed before.

Sometimes it is an owner’s inspiration image that they’ve been carrying around or a feeling they’ve experienced somewhere, sometime. Other times, it’s an architect’s concept sketch or the example of one of the great historical glasshouses of the past; the same was true for this greenhouse. The owner, builder and the Tanglewood team collaborated together.

PERCHED HIGH ON A SECOND FLOOR DECK, this interconnected pair of horticultural houses supports the passion of its owner, an avid orchid enthusiast. Inside, a uniquely decorated steel structure is used to support the glass facades in much the same way nineteenth century designers first used iron and glass to build their now historic palm houses. The steel structural system is both decorative and functional. It is used as a design element but also allows the room to be constructed so that it is lightweight and transparent. The vision, now as then, is to allow in as much light as possible so that the plants within might flourish.

This custom English greenhouse was designed and built here in America for a historic farmhouse in New England. ONE MIGHT EASILY ENVISION this small greenhouse to be an elegant conservatory high on its overlooking perch. Instead, the owners use the south facing room to pot the many specimens that will fill their home.

The unusual contour of the greenhouse roof was designed to mimic the lines of the main house. The cupola is glass, but the lower roof is clad with lead-coated copper on the outside and trimmed with mahogany bead board on the inside.

During the nineteenth century, great palm houses were built around the world. These fantastical greenhouses were designed as much to showcase the new building materials – steel and glass that had become available to architects and builders, as they were to house specimens.

They were whimsical, transparent, crystalline conservatories often attached to a formal manor home, and they provided their occupants the opportunity to bask in light and congeniality. Cast iron, steel and glass were the materials that made them possible and this custom, steel conservatory greenhouse is no exception.
