The Chateau Lednice Conservatory at Liechtenstein Castle in the southern area of Moravia in the Czech Republic is a beautiful example of the country’s superlative glass conservatories. When Duke Alois II, the Prince of Liechtenstein decided to add a conservatory during the remodel of his castle in 1840. He looked to England for the design, choosing English architect, P.H. Desvignes, to create the project which was built in the avant-garde Style of John Claudias Loudon.

Desvignes created the system of semi-circular arches ending in quarter spheres that give the conservatory a particularly graceful look and provide much of the building’s rigidity, eliminating the need for the diagonal supports so often seen in glass conservatories. The result is a sense of openness even as the glass protects the Lednice interior from weather of all sorts.

Famous for its many details, this conservatory leans on oriental designs. For example, Persian rugs inspired the design of the ventilation grilles, while the capitals of the cast-iron pillars are based on banana leaves. Topped by a pagoda-like ventilation structure, the total effect is a bit like an exotic oriental garden.

Also known as the Lednice Orangery, this glass and cast iron conservatory was the first stand-alone glasshouse in Europe. Small wonder this lovely conservatory was designated a Conservatory Heritage Foundation site. A refurbishing of the structure revealed that in addition to cast iron, forged iron was used in some of the decorative pillars.

The floor of the conservatory is another marvel. The path that leads one through the plantings is actually constructed of cast iron grates which allow heat from a heating system to warm the interior.

An ideal destination site for conservatory lovers travelling to the Czech Republic, the castle with its glass conservatory is set in the midst of an extensive landscape park or region of over 109 square miles. This huge park is designated as a ‘cultural landscape,’ an official term of World Heritage Sites, which defines the area as “a landscape designed and created intentionally by man.” It stretches roughly between the Lednice and Valtice areas of the South Moravian Region, near Břeclav in the Czech Republic, providing much to explore for any visitor.

Stepping into a 19th-century conservatory is like walking into a cathedral of light.
From the soaring iron arches of the Crystal Palace to the delicately adorned palm houses of Europe, these glasshouses were more than architectural achievements. They were symbols of refinement, status, and scientific progress — places where nature and design intertwined, where steel and glass transformed daylight into spectacle.

Today, this legacy lives on. At Tanglewood, we do not simply draw inspiration from these historic marvels, we carry their spirit forward in every design. And never has this been more evident than in our latest steel conservatory project: a monumental, hand-crafted roof structure that echoes the romance of a bygone era.

Conservatories: The Ironwork Icons That Shaped a Century

The conservatories of the 1800s were feats of engineering and artistry. With the Industrial Revolution came the ability to forge iron into sweeping spans and ornate castings, unlocking architectural possibilities previously unimaginable. Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace, unveiled in 1851, stretched nearly 1 million square feet and dazzled with its endless walls of glass framed in cast iron. It wasn’t just a building — it was a statement of vision.

Across Europe and beyond, botanical conservatories began to appear on royal estates and in public parks. These were not mere greenhouses; they were temples of enlightenment, built to cultivate exotic plants and the human imagination.

Fast-forward to today, and steel has become the natural heir to cast iron and allows modern designers the freedom to create one-of-a-kind legacies. The true beauty is how steel enables us to do more than replicate the past. It allows us to reinterpret it, honoring the architectural vocabulary of the 19th century while applying contemporary methods and client vision.

An Architectural Love Letter

Our current project, a soaring steel conservatory roof, illustrates this philosophy in motion. Inside our workshop, what begins as raw material soon takes shape as something far greater: curved trusses, hand-finished decorative cutouts, and a profile that evokes the grandeur of Gothic arches and vaulted ceilings.

Every detail is intentional. The medallion cutouts lining the arches are not just embellishments; they are a direct conversation with history. Inspired by traditional wrought iron ornamentation, they bring movement, light play, and refinement to an otherwise industrial structure.

But more than that, they bring soul. This is where engineering becomes art.

In the months ahead, our craftsmen will complete fabrication of this 1,300-square-foot glass roof enclosure — soon to live at the heart of a new home. Once installed, it will crown a soaring atrium where sunlight pours in, lush plantings thrive, and guests are welcomed into a space designed for serenity, gathering, and a connection with the natural world.

This extraordinary project was made possible through close collaboration with several of our valued partners: PKA Architecture, North Arrow Architecture, Hendel Homes, Codie Donahue Interior Design, and Topo Landscape Design— each bringing their own artistry and expertise to the vision.

Why This Matters Now

There is a quiet resurgence happening — an architectural return to spaces that do more than shelter. Clients today seek homes that inspire. Rooms that bring you closer to nature. Structures that feel like heirlooms, even when newly built.

After 30 years, each new conservatory still feels like an adventure for our Founders Alan and Nancy…

It is not just about the architecture, but the entire experience—the sense of discovery, the connection to history, and the marvel at what’s possible with modern technology. Conservatories captivated our founders three decades ago with their rich heritage and the unique combination of glass architecture with vibrant plant life. Today, they are still just as enamored as the first time they stepped into a conservatory.

Reflecting on their journey, Alan shared what continues to fuel his passion after all these years:

“It is something about the architecture and technology that makes these great conservatories possible. Thinking back to 18th and 19th-century conservatories, they were cutting-edge for their time. People didn’t use steel in buildings like this; large panes of glass were unheard of. And yet, they put it all together to create these breathtaking structures—it was mind-boggling! The really exciting part is that we’re still building these technologically advanced conservatories today. We’re using steel and glass, but now with modern technology, computers, and sophisticated engineering, we can create amorphous shapes and tension cable structures. It’s really exciting to see and to be a part of that.”

Alan’s words capture the essence of the uniqueness of conservatories; no two are ever the same, and with every design, there’s an opportunity to reimagine what these magical spaces can become. Whether it’s an old conservatory or a new one, you walk inside and immediately feel a sense of awe. You can’t help but stop and ask yourself: “How did they do this? Who designed it? What kind of vision did it take to bring this to life?”

The adventure lies not only in the design but in the stories behind these structures. Nancy reflected on their travels over the years and noted combing through photographs of early construction workers, perched 20-30 feet in the air, building these massive glass structures: “It is somebody’s dream,” she says. “Somebody dreamed of owning, building, and caring for the living plants within it.” 

That sense of passion, struggle, and vision is something we bring back and infuse into our work at Tanglewood. For Alan and Nancy, it is not just about observing the beauty of these conservatories; it is about being active participants in the journey. They describe it as “a never-ending adventure—discovering the next flavor, experiencing something truly extraordinary. Every new conservatory we visit is like stepping into another world—one filled with light, life, and possibility. The quiet serenity that greets you upon entering is deceiving, for within that calm lies a world of growth and energy. The plants thrive in the sunlight that pours through the transparent walls, and though the air feels still, there’s a constant pulse of life surrounding you.”

After 30 years, the magic of conservatories has not diminished for us. In fact, the adventure continues with each new project, new design, and every moment we spend contributing to the legacy of these extraordinary spaces. Looking ahead, our passion for this craft only grows deeper. It is not every day you get to build a glass structure into the side of a rocky landscape, but it is always a challenge our team looks forward to...

Along the rugged and picturesque coast of the Pacific Northwest, a visionary couple dreamed of creating a unique sanctuary—a glass conservatory that would embrace the landscape and echo the elegance of a bygone era. Captivated by the beauty and ingenuity of early glasshouse architecture, they were inspired by the pioneering spirit of nineteenth-century engineering and wanted their pool enclosure to pay homage to the Victorian-era conservatories that were the first to exploit new materials and techniques from the Industrial Revolution.

They approached Tanglewood Conservatories with their dream, sharing their fascination with structures like the Schönbrunn Palace palm house in Vienna. Their vision was clear: they wanted to blend the historical charm of these architectural wonders with the sleek elegance of modern design. We eagerly accepted the challenge.

Putting pencil to paper, our Sr. Designer crafted a design that embodied the couple’s vision—a steel exoskeleton reminiscent of historical glasshouses, supporting a delicate glass skin that would reflect the tranquil landscape. Articulated trusses suspended the glass panels, creating a seamless and uninterrupted interior surface that housed the serene pool.

As the conservatory took shape, it became a true fusion of old and new. The use of steel and glass, once revolutionary in the Victorian era, now symbolized contemporary architectural prowess. The structure stood as a testament to the enduring legacy of glasshouse architecture, celebrating both history and innovation.

When the project was complete, it was more than just a structure; it was a meditative space that invited visitors to experience the tranquility of nature intertwined with the precision of engineering. The glass pool enclosure became a modern expression of a timeless craft, embodying the couple's dream and Tanglewood Conservatories' commitment to creating extraordinary spaces.

Imagine… living in your favorite historic conservatory.

The fun thing about designing beautiful glass conservatories is you are only limited to your imagination. Often we find our clients are inspired by old-world conservatories or ones they have visited while traveling abroad and seek to recreate the magic of that experience on their estate. To do so, it is important to partner with a firm that understands the true capabilities of conservatories and their heritage.

A few years ago we worked with a family who admired the architecture of the Biltmore Estate; more specifically, the beautiful wood conservatory attached to the main house. If you have never visited the estate, we recommend adding this one to your bucket list!

During the late nineteenth century in the United States, while public conservatories might have been funded and endowed by philanthropists, fashionable American families wanted private glasshouses on their estates.

When George Washington Vanderbilt II first visited Asheville, NC in the late 1800s, he fell in love with the rustic mountain beauty and decided to build this summer home; an English-style country estate far from the bustle of New York City life. Recognized as the largest privately held house in the United States, comprising 250 rooms covering 178,926 square feet, the Biltmore Estate took 6 years to build. It was completed in 1895 under the direction of Architect Richard Morris Hunt. Hunt carefully designed the conservatory to be a showpiece. With timber trusses, a glass roof, and decorative wood beams extending down the walls, the ceiling covering the sunken garden became a grand art fixture that bathed the palms and flowering shrubs below in sunlight.

It was these characteristics and more that our clients also fell in love with. They wanted to create a room bathed in natural sunlight with beautiful, architectural detailing that made a statement when you walked in.

In the delicate dance of light and shadow within glass rooms, it's the small but impactful details that compose the symphony of beauty, infusing each moment with a luminous grace that captivates the soul. One of the many attractive features of conservatories is their transparent and lightweight nature - and to achieve this, every detail of its construction is exposed and thus, must be carefully considered down to the colors.

Stained Glass Conservatories

The introduction of color to glass architecture plays an important role in shaping the aesthetic appeal and emotional experience of those who inhabit it. Stained glass has been used for centuries to tell stories and be visual pieces of art embedded within the architecture of churches, monasteries, and other primary public gathering spaces such as the La Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona and Sainte-Chapelle in France.  The colored light stream influences the mood in the space depending on the hues incorporated.

Warm tones such as rich reds, golden yellows, and earthy browns can evoke feelings of warmth, comfort, and intimacy, creating a cozy retreat where occupants can relax and unwind amidst the lush greenery. Conversely, cool tones like soothing blues, tranquil greens, and serene purples can imbue the conservatory with a sense of calmness, tranquillity, and rejuvenation, fostering a peaceful sanctuary for contemplation and reflection.

By strategically incorporating colors that resonate with the desired mood and ambiance, designers can enhance the sensory experience of luxury conservatories, elevating them from mere structures to immersive havens of beauty and serenity.

Take a look at these custom conservatories for inspiration!

The Brick & Stone Conservatory was designed with organic materials and earthy tones to fit in with its wooded, secluded retreat. For this couple, their vision for this conservatory was to be a private escape for the two of them to unwind after a long day and reconnect over a glass of wine by the fire. The stained glass is subtle, only incorporated as narrow accent windows with hues of yellow and green so as not to cast a drastic colorful light as the sun moves throughout the day. Inside, the beautifully stained mahogany sets the tone for warmth, comfort, and a cozy retreat.

The Cast Stone and Copper Conservatory also incorporated organic materials to blend into its surrounding forest however, its white exterior allows it to stand out as a more inviting gathering place. Inside, the colorful floral stained glass was designed to compliment other art fixtures amidst the conservatory such as the marble flooring, painted ceiling, and wrought iron door leading to a powder room. While secluded, this conservatory was designed to stand out using a mixture of light, bright colors, and more earthy tones. Perfect for hosting guests, the conservatory provides a luxury entertaining spot fit with a full powder room, bar, and indoor/outdoor seating amidst the gardens.

A not-so-secluded retreat, the Riverfront Conservatory engages effortlessly with the original structure, which dates from the early 1800s. The family envisioned a space celebrating nature. Along the clearstory of windows, the stained glass was an intentional art feature, hand-painted to showcase each species of flower that grows on the estate. Combined with the complex geometry of the roof and octagonal glass cupola, the abundance of natural light pouring in creates a symphony of light dancing about the conservatory - fitting as the family frequently held concerts in this room. 

Incorporating stained glass is a great way to create luxury conservatories that not only delight the senses but also nourish the mind, body, and soul. They become immersive sanctuaries where beauty, tranquillity, and inspiration converge in perfect harmony.
