Stepping inside some of today’s most ambitious glass structures, our founders recently traveled to Seattle to admire how modern-day conservatories are interpreting light, structure, and human experience.

The question guiding their journey: How do we innovate without losing the principles that made conservatories endure for centuries?

We often think of historic conservatories as nostalgic or ornamental, but innovation has always been part of conservatory design. They were among the most technologically ambitious structures of their time. Advances in ironwork, glass production, and engineering allowed architects and craftspeople to create unprecedented spaces; environments where nature, architecture, and light could exist in harmony.

What matters most, however, is how that innovation is applied: with restraint, intention, and respect for human and plant experience.

The conservatories of Seattle offered a compelling lens.

Inside the Chihuly Garden and Glass Conservatory, the first thing you notice is not the structure – and that is precisely the point. Here, the structure does not compete with the art, it supports it. Glass and steel become a quiet framework that allows light, color, and nature to take center stage. Every detail is deliberate. Sightlines are considered. Transparency is purposeful.

That quiet confidence is familiar.

Historic conservatories were designed with the same discipline. Their success was never about excess, but about balance and understanding when structures should assert itself and when it should take a step back. Seeing that principle expressed so clearly in a contemporary setting was a powerful reminder that the best conservatory design has always been rooted in restraint.

Later, moving through the Amazon Spheres, the energy shifted; it was clear this conservatory takes on a different, yet equally compelling, role. The conservatory is not a destination meant for occasional visits. The spheres were designed to be lived in. People move through them naturally, working, gathering, pausing among plants and filtered light to recharge. Nature is not ornamental here; it is essential to how the space functions.

What stood out most was how seamlessly the conservatory had been reimagined for modern life.

For centuries, conservatories have offered refuge from harsh climates, urban density, and the noise of daily life. The Spheres reaffirm that this role is not diminished. If anything, it has become more necessary in a world increasingly shaped by screens and speed, conservatories offer something grounding: daylight, living plants, and a physical connection to the natural world.

The form may evolve, but the purpose remains, illustrating that conservatories are not relics of the past, but profoundly relevant to the present.

Carrying The Legacy Forward

It is easy to romanticize historic conservatories without remembering how radical they once were. Iron frameworks, expansive glass roofs, and carefully engineered environments were technological achievements of their time, expressions of optimism, curiosity, and ambition.

As Alan and Nancy’s trip came to a close, one impression stayed with them: innovation is not a departure from tradition. It is part of it. What matters is intention. Innovation that ignores history risks becoming hollow. Heritage that resists evolution risks becoming static. The most enduring work lives between those extremes.

Every journey like this quietly informs the work we do at Tanglewood. It influences how we approach every design, sharpening our attention to detail and reinforces why craftsmanship, material selection, and quality matter. Most importantly, it reminds us that a conservatory is never just a room. It is an experience. One that should feel timeless and deeply personal.

This is the legacy we are committed to carrying forward.

Recently, our founders traveled to Hampshire, England, drawn by a place where history and modern design meet in luminous harmony — the Bombay Sapphire Distillery at Laverstoke Mill. Here, nestled within the brick walls of a restored 18th-century paper mill, stand two remarkable glasshouses that feel both timeless and entirely of our age.

Designed by Heatherwick Studio, these sweeping, sculptural forms rise directly from the river’s edge, their pleated glass panels curving like unfolding petals. One holds the warmth of a tropical climate, the other the sunlit aridity of the Mediterranean — each a living library for the botanicals essential to the distillery’s craft. The glasshouses draw waste heat from the gin-making process, a detail that quietly mirrors what we at Tanglewood value: beauty paired with ingenuity.

For our founders, walking through these structures was more than architectural admiration. It was a step back into the legacy of Britain’s grand conservatories — spaces like Kew’s Palm House or the Crystal Palace — where glass and steel once redefined the relationship between architecture and nature. Here, that heritage is alive, reframed for the 21st century.

The experience was a reminder of why we seek out places like this in our travels: to see how others honor the past while shaping the future. Every curve of glass, every reflection on the river’s surface spoke to the same ideals that inspire our work at Tanglewood Conservatories — that a conservatory is not simply a building, but a bridge between eras, climates, and worlds.

As we returned home, we carried with us not just admiration, but ideas — ways to keep the lineage of historic glasshouses thriving in our own modern designs, ensuring that this remarkable tradition continues to inspire for generations to come.

Imagine… living in your favorite historic conservatory.

The fun thing about designing beautiful glass conservatories is you are only limited to your imagination. Often we find our clients are inspired by old-world conservatories or ones they have visited while traveling abroad and seek to recreate the magic of that experience on their estate. To do so, it is important to partner with a firm that understands the true capabilities of conservatories and their heritage.

A few years ago we worked with a family who admired the architecture of the Biltmore Estate; more specifically, the beautiful wood conservatory attached to the main house. If you have never visited the estate, we recommend adding this one to your bucket list!

During the late nineteenth century in the United States, while public conservatories might have been funded and endowed by philanthropists, fashionable American families wanted private glasshouses on their estates.

When George Washington Vanderbilt II first visited Asheville, NC in the late 1800s, he fell in love with the rustic mountain beauty and decided to build this summer home; an English-style country estate far from the bustle of New York City life. Recognized as the largest privately held house in the United States, comprising 250 rooms covering 178,926 square feet, the Biltmore Estate took 6 years to build. It was completed in 1895 under the direction of Architect Richard Morris Hunt. Hunt carefully designed the conservatory to be a showpiece. With timber trusses, a glass roof, and decorative wood beams extending down the walls, the ceiling covering the sunken garden became a grand art fixture that bathed the palms and flowering shrubs below in sunlight.

It was these characteristics and more that our clients also fell in love with. They wanted to create a room bathed in natural sunlight with beautiful, architectural detailing that made a statement when you walked in.

As we gathered at the prestigious Bruce Museum, Alan transported attendees to another world surrounded by architectural wonders and botanical beauty. Through evocative archival and contemporary photographs and drawings, we were reminded that conservatories are not just architectural wonders but windows into the cultural development of our societies and communities. They stand as symbols of creativity, innovation, and our enduring connection to the natural world.

In addition to being stunning architectural creations that allow us to experience the floras and environments of places far different from our own, they provide us with insights into the cultural development of our societies and communities.”

Conservatories, while beautiful architecturally, can take on many forms. They are magical, delightful, otherworldly spaces so different from any other room you have experienced; a place that winter and cold can never touch but stays in a state of constant bloom. By studying the intersection of cultural and social movements with the technological advances of the time, we discover the many ways that the glass conservatories of the Victorians still touch us today.

As part of the 2024 educational series hosted by the Greenwich Decorative Arts Society, Alan and Nancy will share insights from their publication, “The Conservatory: Gardens Under Glass“, taking you on a journey through architectural design like never before. In this 1 hour session hosted by the Greenwich Decorative Arts Society, discover the rich history and captivating allure of these glass sanctuaries, from their early artistic inspiration by renowned painters like Édouard Manet and James Jacques Joseph Tissot to their modern-day embodiment as architectural marvels adorned with intricate botanical displays and stunning glass-blown artistry by talents like Dale Chihuly.

If you were asked to name three public conservatories, which three would you name?

Most often, we hear the names of iconic conservatories such as the Conservatory at Syon Park and the Palm House at Kew Gardens located in the United Kingdom or, in the United States, the Conservatory at Longwood Gardens and the Conservatory of Flowers. These conservatories paved the way for their rise in popularity during the 19th and 20th centuries, so much so that a few have also been featured in major films or events! Since their rise, hundreds of private and smaller garden glasshouses have been uniquely integrated into the main architecture of large estates, universities, and public gardens as featured showpieces that many are unaware exist in their backyards.

Pennsylvania, United States

Considered the only remaining freestanding Victorian fernery in North America, this unique conservatory is sunk into the earth with a stunning water feature to create the ideal damp conditions for ferns to thrive!

Hluboka nad Vltavou Conservatory
Czech Republic

Part of a stunning historic castle in the Czech Republic, this artistic glass jewel was added in the mid 1800s as a linkway to connect the castle and the riding school building. Cast and wrought iron were used to frame the Winter Garden, as the glasshouse was known. The blend of old and new marries the style of the castle with innovations in conservatory design.

North Carolina, United States

The Biltmore is the largest privately held house in the United States and features a beautiful, timber truss conservatory covering a sunken garden filled with palms and flowering shrubs. The Estate offers an array of social gatherings, venue rentals and overnight stays!

Mark Twain Conservatory
Connecticut, United States

Just as Twain was no typical American, his late 19th-century house was no ordinary house. Meticulously designed with patterned brick motifs and intricate woodwork, the conservatory, filled with lush plants, was often transformed into a "jungle" where Twain pretended to be an elephant in mock safaris with his children.

France

Designed by Jean-Camille Formige (1845-1926), this palm house and adjacent greenhouses rest on the grounds of a small botanical garden dating back to the rule of Louis XV in 1761!

Horniman Conservatory
London, England

Did you know the founder of Horniman's Tea Company was an admirer of conservatories? Constructed to tend to Horniman’s rare plant collection and serve as a place of relaxation for his ailing mother, most do not know the original was disassembled to restore the Crystal Palace Park after a fire in 1977 and was later reconstructed by the English Heritage for the public to enjoy.⁠

Alton Towers Conservatory
Staffordshire, England

While Alton Towers Resort is most known for its exciting theme parks and attractions, they also have a stunning garden attraction with a conservatory dating back to the early 1800s.

We are excited to see the passion for conservatories still prominent today. Marrying the indoors with the outdoors, these beautiful glasshouses play a prominent role in biophilic design and our mental health, and are still admired as a legacy for families to create memories in.
