The Conservatory: Gardens Under Glass

Have you seen the latest review of our book “The Conservatory: Gardens Under Glass” in the spring issue of Boston Home Magazine?

Fun fact: The roots of modern-day conservatories stretch back to at least the 1700s when they were created to shelter fragile flora from inclement weather.

Trace the origins of these glassy masterpieces—and swoon over the leafy wonders they house—in this new volume, written by married conservatory builders Alan Stein and Nancy Virts.

Behind the Pages

A message from the authors…

“We first became enamoured of these glass wonders while studying and travelling abroad. Our careers in architecture and textile art set the stage and our company Tanglewood Conservatories is the natural conclusion. We established Tanglewood with the goal of combining the romanticism of traditional nineteenth-century glass architecture with state of the art technology and masterful craftsmanship. Our goal has never changed.

Over the last 25 years in business, our passion for these extraordinary conservatories continued to blossom and has inspired us to create this beautiful publication. It tells the story of their evolution, their impact on society, and why after more than 150 years, they are cherished anew.”
