Stepping inside some of today’s most ambitious glass structures, our founders recently traveled to Seattle to admire how modern-day conservatories are interpreting light, structure, and human experience.

The question guiding their journey: How do we innovate without losing the principles that made conservatories endure for centuries?

We often think of historic conservatories as nostalgic or ornamental, but innovation has always been part of conservatory design. They were among the most technologically ambitious structures of their time. Advances in ironwork, glass production, and engineering allowed architects and craftspeople to create unprecedented spaces; environments where nature, architecture, and light could exist in harmony.

What matters most, however, is how that innovation is applied: with restraint, intention, and respect for human and plant experience.

The conservatories of Seattle offered a compelling lens.

Exploring the Public Conservatories of Seattle, WA

Inside the Chihuly Garden and Glass Conservatory, the first thing you notice is not the structure – and that is precisely the point. Here, the structure does not compete with the art, it supports it. Glass and steel become a quiet framework that allows light, color, and nature to take center stage. Every detail is deliberate. Sightlines are considered. Transparency is purposeful.

That quiet confidence is familiar.

Historic conservatories were designed with the same discipline. Their success was never about excess, but about balance and understanding when structures should assert itself and when it should take a step back. Seeing that principle expressed so clearly in a contemporary setting was a powerful reminder that the best conservatory design has always been rooted in restraint.

Later, moving through the Amazon Spheres, the energy shifted; it was clear this conservatory takes on a different, yet equally compelling, role. The conservatory is not a destination meant for occasional visits. The spheres were designed to be lived in. People move through them naturally, working, gathering, pausing among plants and filtered light to recharge. Nature is not ornamental here; it is essential to how the space functions.

What stood out most was how seamlessly the conservatory had been reimagined for modern life.

For centuries, conservatories have offered refuge from harsh climates, urban density, and the noise of daily life. The Spheres reaffirm that this role is not diminished. If anything, it has become more necessary in a world increasingly shaped by screens and speed, conservatories offer something grounding: daylight, living plants, and a physical connection to the natural world.

The form may evolve, but the purpose remains, illustrating that conservatories are not relics of the past, but profoundly relevant to the present.

Carrying The Legacy Forward

It is easy to romanticize historic conservatories without remembering how radical they once were. Iron frameworks, expansive glass roofs, and carefully engineered environments were technological achievements of their time, expressions of optimism, curiosity, and ambition.

As Alan and Nancy’s trip came to a close, one impression stayed with them: innovation is not a departure from tradition. It is part of it. What matters is intention. Innovation that ignores history risks becoming hollow. Heritage that resists evolution risks becoming static. The most enduring work lives between those extremes.

Every journey like this quietly informs the work we do at Tanglewood. It influences how we approach every design, sharpening our attention to detail and reinforces why craftsmanship, material selection, and quality matter. Most importantly, it reminds us that a conservatory is never just a room. It is an experience. One that should feel timeless and deeply personal.

This is the legacy we are committed to carrying forward.

There is something magical about stepping into an estate greenhouse on a crisp autumn morning. Coffee still in hand, gathering a handful of freshly picked greens or pulling a just-harvested root vegetable from the soil in preparation for the day's meals. In a season when most gardens are winding down, your estate greenhouse becomes a sanctuary of abundance, extending the joy of harvest and transforming daily meals into an intimate garden-to-table ritual.

Estate Greenhouses: The Garden-to-Table Lifestyle

Estate greenhouses allow you to experience the seasons in ways outdoor gardens cannot. They create continuity; a space where fresh ingredients are always within reach and where the art of growing becomes inseparable from the art of cooking and sharing. It is more than gardening; it is creating moments. Each harvest becomes a lesson, a joy, and a meal — where children, grandchildren, and loved ones discover the simple pleasure of food grown together and shared around the family table.

The beauty of growing your own edibles is that the journey doesn’t end in the greenhouse; it culminates at the table. Imagine serving a warm dish made entirely from what you’ve nurtured, each bite carrying the memory of planting, tending, and harvesting.

This Fall, consider planting edibles that thrive in the cooler months and lend themselves beautifully to autumn recipes. By curating the right mix of fall edibles, your estate greenhouse becomes a culinary resource that elevates seasonal dining:

Leafy Greens – Spinach, arugula, and kale bring a burst of freshness to hearty fall dishes.

Root Vegetables – Carrots, beets, and radishes roast to perfection and add depth to soups and stews.

Herbs – Parsley, cilantro, and chives infuse comfort foods with brightness.

Brassicas – Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts enrich seasonal cooking.

Garlic & Onions – Essential foundations for countless recipes, planted now for a steady supply later.

Bringing It to the Table

As fall quickly approaches, delicious soups start becoming the comfort meals we crave! Here is a recipe you may want to try using the edibles from your garden! Click here to download this recipe card.

Recently, our founders traveled to Hampshire, England, drawn by a place where history and modern design meet in luminous harmony — the Bombay Sapphire Distillery at Laverstoke Mill. Here, nestled within the brick walls of a restored 18th-century paper mill, stand two remarkable glasshouses that feel both timeless and entirely of our age.

Designed by Heatherwick Studio, these sweeping, sculptural forms rise directly from the river’s edge, their pleated glass panels curving like unfolding petals. One holds the warmth of a tropical climate, the other the sunlit aridity of the Mediterranean — each a living library for the botanicals essential to the distillery’s craft. The glasshouses draw waste heat from the gin-making process, a detail that quietly mirrors what we at Tanglewood value: beauty paired with ingenuity.

For our founders, walking through these structures was more than architectural admiration. It was a step back into the legacy of Britain’s grand conservatories — spaces like Kew’s Palm House or the Crystal Palace — where glass and steel once redefined the relationship between architecture and nature. Here, that heritage is alive, reframed for the 21st century.

Luxury and sustainability are no longer on opposite ends of the spectrum — they are working together. And nowhere is this more visible than in the rising appeal of high-end, luxury estate greenhouses. These are not just spaces to grow herbs and tomatoes or to cultivate a rare exotic plant collection. They are high-design architectural features, wellness hubs, and lifestyle statements that reflect a deeper commitment to our personal well-being and to the planet.

But their journey to becoming the greenhouses we recognize today is a rich story — one rooted in science, beauty, and status.

The Evolution of Conservatories and Greenhouses

In 18th and 19th century Europe, conservatories were more than just architectural marvels — they were living reflections of status, science, and health. Built to house exotic plants and protect delicate citrus trees from harsh winters, these structures were hallmarks of wealth and taste. Often attached to sprawling estates, conservatories blended botany with architectural ambition, featuring intricate metalwork, soaring glass ceilings, and classical detailing that turned practical spaces into symbols of refinement.

But beyond their beauty, conservatories served vital roles in the lives of the elite. Wealthy families used these sun-filled spaces to cultivate rare fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants year-round — ingredients that were critical to health and healing long before modern refrigeration or pharmaceuticals. Fresh citrus, grown under glass, became a powerful weapon against scurvy. Herbal gardens supported early forms of medical research and home remedies. The ability to access fresh, nutrient-rich foods in any season was seen not just as a luxury but as a major advantage for longevity and wellness.

Owning a conservatory also aligned with the intellectual trends of the time. It showcased a connection to exploration, global trade, and scientific curiosity — a way to bring the far corners of the world into one’s own home, under careful cultivation. Travel journals, botanical collections, and medicinal studies often found their practical counterpart inside these glass sanctuaries.

From displaying rare botanical treasures gathered abroad to growing fruits and herbs vital for health, the conservatory represented both personal prestige and a proactive approach to wellness — a concept that resonates even more strongly today. That legacy carries forward into the modern greenhouse movement, reimagined for today's priorities: sustainability, health, and a deeper connection to how we live with nature.

Learn more about their fascinating journey in our book: The Conservatory: Gardens Under Glass.

The Impact of Modern-Day Estate Greenhouses

Today’s luxury estate greenhouses take cues from historic conservatories with a deep appreciation for both function and form, but their impact on the world around them has grown. There is power in growing your own food — and not just nutritionally. When you harvest produce from your own greenhouse, you are cutting out transport, packaging, and food waste. You know what went into the soil, and what did not. You are creating a direct relationship with your food — something increasingly rare.

Estate Greenhouses: Beauty and Purpose

These luxury estate greenhouses are sculptural presences — works of art that grow food and florals. Their glass walls reflect the sky, invite light, and create a seamless connection between indoors and nature. They support sustainability, health, and a more intentional lifestyle — all while elevating the space around them. A modern estate greenhouse is not just something you use. It’s something you live with. And it should look as good as it makes you feel.

What started as a way to protect delicate trees in royal gardens has evolved into a personal solution for sustainable living. Today’s luxury estate greenhouse reflects a shift in values — one that sees beauty and purpose as equally essential.

This Earth Day, the message is simple: caring for the planet can be beautiful. A greenhouse can be a statement piece, yes — but also a quiet revolution in how we live, eat, and think about luxury.

Love is in the air—and at Tanglewood Conservatories, our hearts beat for something extraordinary: the romance of bespoke conservatories. Our designs are not just about creating spaces; they are about creating experiences—places where mornings feel softer bathed in golden sunlight, where evening gatherings glow under the stars, and where every season is a celebration of nature’s artistry.

There is something undeniably poetic about a carefully crafted glass room that captures natural light, blurs the lines between indoors and out, and cradles its occupants in an embrace of artistry and craftsmanship. They are love letters to timeless design, where every mullion, column, and pane of glass tells a story of passion, dedication, and beauty.

Take a stroll with us as we explore key details in some of our most beloved bespoke conservatories.

The Details That Steal Our Hearts

In conservatory design, true love is found in the details. Their lightweight, transparent nature exposes every detail of the room from its structural members to the decorated corbels and columns. At its core, every conservatory is designed to reflect the personality and aspirations of its owner, blending old-world charm with modern innovation.

Whether it’s a Victorian-inspired glasshouse, a sleek steel-framed retreat, or a delicate garden room designed for quiet moments of reflection, our approach ensures that, like a beautifully written sonnet, each conservatory is a unique expression—one that stands the test of time, growing more cherished with each passing year.

As you scroll through the projects below, take note of the marriage of materials, decorative cutouts and accents, carefully designed stained glass accents, and the integration of nature with architecture. With every design, each tells a piece of our client's story.

After 30 years, each new conservatory still feels like an adventure for our Founders Alan and Nancy…

It is not just about the architecture, but the entire experience—the sense of discovery, the connection to history, and the marvel at what’s possible with modern technology. Conservatories captivated our founders three decades ago with their rich heritage and the unique combination of glass architecture with vibrant plant life. Today, they are still just as enamored as the first time they stepped into a conservatory.

Reflecting on their journey, Alan shared what continues to fuel his passion after all these years:

“It is something about the architecture and technology that makes these great conservatories possible. Thinking back to 18th and 19th-century conservatories, they were cutting-edge for their time. People didn’t use steel in buildings like this; large panes of glass were unheard of. And yet, they put it all together to create these breathtaking structures—it was mind-boggling! The really exciting part is that we’re still building these technologically advanced conservatories today. We’re using steel and glass, but now with modern technology, computers, and sophisticated engineering, we can create amorphous shapes and tension cable structures. It’s really exciting to see and to be a part of that.”

Alan’s words capture the essence of the uniqueness of conservatories; no two are ever the same, and with every design, there’s an opportunity to reimagine what these magical spaces can become. Whether it’s an old conservatory or a new one, you walk inside and immediately feel a sense of awe. You can’t help but stop and ask yourself: “How did they do this? Who designed it? What kind of vision did it take to bring this to life?”

The adventure lies not only in the design but in the stories behind these structures. Nancy reflected on their travels over the years and noted combing through photographs of early construction workers, perched 20-30 feet in the air, building these massive glass structures: “It is somebody’s dream,” she says. “Somebody dreamed of owning, building, and caring for the living plants within it.”

That sense of passion, struggle, and vision is something we bring back and infuse into our work at Tanglewood. For Alan and Nancy, it is not just about observing the beauty of these conservatories; it is about being active participants in the journey. They describe it as “a never-ending adventure—discovering the next flavor, experiencing something truly extraordinary. Every new conservatory we visit is like stepping into another world—one filled with light, life, and possibility. The quiet serenity that greets you upon entering is deceiving, for within that calm lies a world of growth and energy. The plants thrive in the sunlight that pours through the transparent walls, and though the air feels still, there’s a constant pulse of life surrounding you.”

After 30 years, the magic of conservatories has not diminished for us. In fact, the adventure continues with each new project, new design, and every moment we spend contributing to the legacy of these extraordinary spaces. Looking ahead, our passion for this craft only grows deeper. By continuing to work alongside others who share our passion, we can push the boundaries of what conservatories can be - melding art, nature, and technology to create sanctuaries where people can gather, grow, and make memories.

It is not every day you get to build a glass structure into the side of a rocky landscape, but it is always a challenge our team looks forward to...

Along the rugged and picturesque coast of the Pacific Northwest, a visionary couple dreamed of creating a unique sanctuary—a glass conservatory that would embrace the landscape and echo the elegance of a bygone era. Captivated by the beauty and ingenuity of early glasshouse architecture, they were inspired by the pioneering spirit of nineteenth-century engineering and wanted their pool enclosure to pay homage to the Victorian-era conservatories that were the first to exploit new materials and techniques from the Industrial Revolution.

They approached Tanglewood Conservatories with their dream, sharing their fascination with structures like the Schönbrunn Palace palm house in Vienna. Their vision was clear: they wanted to blend the historical charm of these architectural wonders with the sleek elegance of modern design. We eagerly accepted the challenge.
